Ireland, Love and Life.

There were mounds of haystacks as far as the eye could see arching above miles of verdant green grass. You can't understand green until you go to Ireland.

Not the new variety of haystack, the homemade variety. The kind a 5-year old could climb as her father pulled her leg causing her to topple off.
a
Climb, pull, giggle. Climb, pull, giggle.
a
The farm belonged to Auntie Eileen. She resided outside of Dundalk, Ireland.
a
Visiting her was more mysterious then going to the moon.
a
We were American and rich. She didn't have indoor plumbing. We had to pee in a pot hidden under her bed beneath a lace doily.
a
It was very glamorous.
a
We sat at her table with dainty china cups clinking, drinking extra tea with pinkees extended just to gain the opportunity to pee in that metal pot.
a
That is what it means to be Irish. The illusion of grandeur, the mystery of shame...and laughter.

How I envy your trips to Ireland! As much as I can imagine that green, I know that my imaginings are no where close to the greenness of it.

We were poor and Canadian, but we had a chamber pot under the bed too. It beat dressing up and trudging out to the outhouse in the cold winter nights.

I love your blog Charmaine, I keep hoping the King will turn out to be "the One".

i am all for the olden times and land of the forefathers and all that, but dammit, give me a potty that flushes!!! I KNOW that they used to do it ALL in a pot, or behind a tree, but eww

Oh, those old chamber pots under the bed. We should all take a moment to salute our indoor plumbing! Lovely memories of Ireland, would love to travel there one day.

Charmaine needs to clarify that it wasn't a chamber pot. It was an actual bucket.

My mother insists that when we went to Auntie Eileen's, we would all ask to pee in the bucket. Although I realize that I was 2 years old at the time, I'm pretty sure I did NOT do that!

You made me cry...and laugh...and feel my Irish.

Bless you, my dear.

Ireland is n my list. I'm tld that the reason so many Irish settled here in east Tennessee is that the lushly green rolling hills are strikkingly similar.

So that's what it's like to be Irish, eh? And here I thought all you needed was to be drunk... :P
