Booty Call Update

I can't provide the update to "Booty Call" until I purchase a new camera. As my friend Simplicity would say, "Wait for it".
a
Instead I will tell you I received a phone call from Chris, an old college buddy. (It's been 25 years since we last spoke.) He found me on facebook. We talked until my phone died. I couldn't stop talking. I told him EVERYTHING. (He'll probably block my number).
a
His favorite thing to say was, "Girl, why you always Doggin' me?"
a
Chris and I lived in a Dorm (on the same floor) at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He gave me guitar lessons or we just visited. I think I used to drag him around town including, once, to my mothers house. He was a tall, kind young man. His gentle nature and warm laughter made me feel safe. Chris was my friend.
a
Chris was a DJ on our campus radio station. He dedicated songs to me. (He has a Hip Hop show called The Eclipse on Public Radio KGNU 88.5 Sunday nights at 7:00 PM in Denver.) Chris introduced me to soul music. He created tapes for me I carried for my entire life. I STILL have one.
a
Years later I memorized one of the rap songs. I was gonna be the first white woman rapper. But my pronunciation was a little off. I settled for leaving outgoing messages on my answering machine.
a
To show Chris how "cool" I turned out, I recited my rapping outgoing voice message from 25 years ago:

Hey, hello, Charmaine is here,
I can't come to phone cuz nobody's home.
We're rappin', huh, we're rockin' to the beat.
Call again, not late, hell I gotta sleep.
If you're a bill collector callin' my phone,
Don't call agin, I think your from the Ozone.
If you can dig my rappin' and you think that your sleek,
Then just start talkin' when you hear the little beep.

Um yea. He wasn't impressed. Samples from a tape Chris made for me over 25 years ago: Soul and rap music was innocent and romantic. To this day, hearing them makes me happy. Thanks Chris!)
a
Junior - Mamma Used to Say. Check OUT this man's sweet moves!
Evelyn Champagne King - Love Come Down
The Gap Band - You dropped a Bomb on Me.
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five - The Message (The one I memorized.)
Shalamar - Over and Over. Gosh, it's so romantic (faints)

'Don't push me...I'm close to the edge..."

That was the BOMB!

You dropped a bomb on me all right, I can still how lucky I was to get a dance with the prettiest girl at Portsmouth Catholic!

Man, that brought back some memories. I also had a quite vigorous dance routine for 'Rock Lobster' by the B-52's. Blast from the past, woo-hoo! See also http://irishgumbo.blogspot.com/2008/11/portrait-of-irish-gumbo-as-punk-rocker.html.

Charmaine, bless you. That made my morning!

Soooooo... I never pictured you being a fan of the jerry-curl mullet. I do however think you could rock the hot pink jacket. ;)

Ah, the good old days of rap music. You had a gift there, Charmaine. I think you missed your calling!

So is that guy your college roomate or the bootycall? I am slow on the uptake.
Love the 80's. My hair can never be big enough!

Bait and switch? Shame on you. Yea, verily.

The only rap I ever made up was about a classmate of mine in junior high. Very mean. Not proud.

Years ago my wife auditioned for "Cop Rock," a short-lived Steven Bochco series. For her audition submission I wrote a rap:

My name is Denise,
I'm with the POlice,
I'm a mean street walkin,
Hip jive talkin,
Lady of the law and it's you that I'm stalkin,
Yeah I joined the force,
After my divorce,
Threw my ex in jail,
I got no remorse....

Ok, what did you expect? I'm a middle-class white guy.

I just listened to all of those songs for the first time in, let's think, 25 years! My son looked a little confused, so I tried to explain the first generation rap songs, etc. He didn't care. But I'm still dancing in my white girl pretending to be black kind of way!

Irish - I'm so glad you said that. I was beginning to think I was the only one.

Braja-I think it was an American thang. Did they rap in Australia?

LL: My biggest dream in life was getting onto Soul Train. But usually, you can find me at the Opera. See, I'm complex.

Heather - Ha. Weren't those the days? Wait, you're too young to remember them.

Goddess - A male roomate? Ha are you kidding? hee hee. This guy lived on the same floor. Girls on one wing boys on the other. Pretty progressive for the 80's. But back then, we were so innocent.

Michele- If you called me, I could still do my white woman rap. It never fails to amuse.

Michelle -Something about me rapping is wrong on so many levels it's right.

Hedgie- It's coming. I'm charging up the camera.

Anns Rants - Let's hear. Come on. I did mine already. We won't judge ya. hee hee

Last place - that is HILARIOUS! ah

Briana- you were there. Did you start dancing in your living room when you heard "Junior"?

I did some "chair dancing." My son thinks I am weird.

Irish, I just looked at your punk rocker pictures. If you're lucky I'll post some pictures of when I went through the Madonna-wanna-be phase, complete with black lace gloves. I wonder where those pictures are?

If I can find my black denim pants with the zippers all over them, we've got a date!

Well, my first reaction was, "Hey, I just got mentioned in a blog post!"

My second reaction was, "Sweetie, don't quit your day job!" ;)

And my 3rd reaction was that this boy was, obviously, a very cool friend! How cool that you're back in touch.

I used to love rap music. When it didn't take half an hour to understand the story!

Funny how our past always catches up with us. A rapper, no, would never have guessed it, he he.

So lets hope Santa is going to bring you a camera....

HA HA HA! Your rap is AWESOME! I had one on my answering machine in high school, it went a little something like THIS....

Hey, how ya doin?
Sorry you can't get thru,
Jenny P ain't home right now,
I'm chillen with my crew.
Please don't bother paging me,
Unless this is my "boo"
Just leave your name and number
And I'll get back to you!

Yah, ghetto white cheerleader much? LOL

Charmaine said...

Just Jen - Girl, you GOT IT! hee hee

Lily - Santa (a.k.a. Charmaine) got me a camera all right. I needed it to show the mountain of gifts Evil Surfer unexpectedly delivered. I'm thinking inside each box is a McDonalds certificate or some such.

Hey there, I had a friend at CU about 25 years ago named Charmaine. I'm wondering if you might be her. It's such an unusual name. I lived in Farrand Hall in 1980 and the Charmaine I knew was living in an all girls dorm nearby. I think she was from California. I moved to the east coast after my second year and never saw her again.
